General Questions

What is Resting Reef and how does it work?

Whether it is for yourself, a loved one or a beloved pet, Resting Reef is a memorial service that transforms the ashes into reef structures that help restore marine ecosystems. This unique tribute allows your loved one or yourself to become part of a vibrant underwater habitat, supporting marine life.

Where exactly are the reefs located?

Our memorial reefs are located in Tulamben, a village in Northern Bali, where they actively support the regeneration of damaged marine ecosystems. This region's coral reefs have suffered severe destruction from harmful practices, including coral harvesting, blast fishing, bottom trawling, and other destructive activities. The local community has long been eager to restore its coastal waters; however, both funding and expertise have been scarce. We’re currently working to establish additional memorial reef sites globally. To be the first to know about new locations, please sign up for our newsletter.

Do you need all my loved one's ashes to build a memorial reef?

Our formula is designed to hold up to 3kg of ashes. In the Memorial Reef, you can memorialise any amount of ashes up to this limit. Our Pet Community Reef allows you to contribute a small amount (50g) of ashes and still have a great impact alongside other beloved pets.

Can I visit the reef where my loved one's ashes are placed?

Yes, you can visit the reef both through snorkelling and scuba diving if you are in Bali. The reef is placed at 7 meters deep, and not far from shore. If you are interested in a unique on-site experience, please learn more about our Experiential Reef service. At the same time, it is important for us to offer a service that does not require visits to Bali in order to connect with your memorial reef. We make sure you receive updates, including videos, images, and scientific insights, from the comfort of your home.

If you are in Bali, we can assist in arranging visits with local diving schools. Please reach out, and we will support you with this.

What is included in the service?

The services provided vary depending on the memorial reef option you choose. All options include transforming the ashes into a reef structure (individual or shared), placement at the reef site, GPS coordinates of the location, ongoing monitoring, updates on the reef’s progress for a year, and a miniature reef memento. To learn more about the available services and additional add-ons, visit the “Our Services” section on our homepage.

What are the waiting times for the service?

Our timelines follow nature’s cycles and can vary depending on the weather and season. As we plan to bring ashes to Bali in 2–3 batches per year, the waiting time can vary between 1 – 7 months. Please reach out to learn when our next reef installation will take place.

How long does it take for the reef to fully develop?

Coral reefs take time to grow, and you can expect significant development over several months to a few years. Rest assured, your contribution to marine life will grow steadily over time. The first year will mainly show algae growth and fish occupying the memorial. In the coming years, you will see more early coral growth.

Is this service available for humans and pets?

Yes, this service is available for both humans and pets. If you have any questions, please reach out.

Environmental Impact

How does the reef help the environment?

Resting Reef’s memorial reefs actively revive marine ecosystems by creating habitats for sea life and accelerating coral restoration. We place these structures specifically in damaged seabed areas where they can make the greatest ecological difference.Large areas of the seabed have been devastated by human activities. Without stable structures, the floating biodiversity in the water column cannot settle, leaving only barren sand and sediments. This is where our memorial reefs become vital, providing the stable foundation needed to recolonise these damaged marine ecosystems.

Is the process environmentally friendly?

We are committed to making our process as sustainable as possible, from production methods to material choices. All the memorial reefs are created locally with accessible materials by the local community. We are also aware of ways we can improve, and we always strive to work towards that.

By being memorialised in one of our reef structures, the ashes can contribute positively to the environment. We base our formula on scientific research that shows how bone ash can boost marine growth due to the phosphorus in our bones (Veeger, M., Ottelé, M., & Prieto, A. (2021). Making bioreceptive concrete: Formulation and testing of bioreceptive concrete mixtures. Journal of Building Engineering, 44, 102545.) This is the case with both water cremated and traditional cremated ashes.

Can the ashes leach and be harmful to the environment?

We have conducted leaching tests of our formula with the SEALIFE London Aquarium, and the results confirmed that this material is safe in a marine environment. Instead of being harmful, they provide beneficial minerals that actively support the growth of coral and other marine organisms on the reef structure's surface.

Memorial Options

Can I personalise the memorial reef and service?

Yes, we offer personalisation options. Please get in touch with us for more information and guidance on this, or visit our “Experiential Reef” offering if you are looking for a Premium service.

Can I dedicate a reef to more than one pet?

Yes, we can combine the ashes into a single reef structure, creating a shared and meaningful memorial for all your pets. This option is available for all reef types. For the Community Reef, a service must be purchased for each pet individually. For the Individual Reef, you can choose how much of each pet's ashes to incorporate into the structure.

Logistics

How do I send my loved one's ashes to Resting Reef?

Once you’ve booked the service, we’ll send you instructions on how to safely send your ashes to our facility. If you are based outside of the UK and wish to send more than 50g, please contact us.

How will I know where my memorial reef is located?

You will receive the GPS coordinates for the reef location, along with updates for a year and photos showing the progress of the reef site.

How often will I receive updates?

Part of our service includes updating you on the restoration progress. These updates include underwater photos and videos for a year. We conduct monitoring work and will keep you updated. The monitoring intervals can vary depending on different factors like weather conditions and reef progress.

What happens if the reef is damaged?

Although it is highly unlikely due to our careful placement of the reef structures, in the event of any damage, we will be in touch with you.
